CBS’s doesn’t plan on renewing their long-running soap The Young and the Restless after this season. The daytime show celebrated their 11,000th episode in September 2016. When The Young and the Restless first aired, CBS planned on producing a youthful show to compete with All My Children and General Hospital. The soap has received many accolades and awards, including 116 Daytime Emmys. The show’s cancellation has little to do with ratings.

The show’s head writer, Sally Sussman, says the cancellation is due to a lack of interest by the writing staff and actors to continue the series.

“We just don’t want to do this anymore. We’re running characters into walls. The writing team is frustrated. The talent is frustrated. The show hasn’t made sense in years but we’ve been pushing out this drivel just for the ratings. My heart just isn’t in it.”

Sally continued on to say that they might commit to a finale that brings the current story arc to a close, resolving many of the recent conflicts the characters have had.

“I’m thinking about a sexually transmitted flesh-eating disease or an apocalyptic meteor strike impacting Genoa City, quickly ending the lives of all of the characters.”

A CBS spokesperson announced on Thursday that if this article is shared across social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, they will consider bringing on a new head writer to keep The Young and the Restless on for a minimum of two more seasons.
